Senja Photography
Senja is one of Northern Norway’s most dramatic islands, where sharp mountains rise directly from fjords, beaches and small fishing villages. This gallery brings together images from Segla, Hesten, Husfjellet, Tungeneset, Bøvær, Husøy and Hamn, shaped by clear Arctic light, turquoise water and rugged coastal terrain.
Segla dominates the view from Hesten, rising like a blade above the fjord and surrounding mountains in clear late-summer light.
Summer fireweed along the shore below Hesten and Segla, with steep grey mountains rising from blue water on the Senja coast.
A quiet fjord view on Senja, framed by fireweed in the foreground and a steep mountain rising above the water.
Smooth coastal rocks and still pools at Tungeneset, looking towards the jagged Okshornan peaks across the sea.
The Okshornan peaks reflected in a calm rock pool at Tungeneset, where polished coastal stone meets the open Norwegian Sea.
Segla rises sharply above Mefjorden, its vertical rock face dividing the fjord, village and surrounding peaks in one of Senja’s classic mountain views.
From Hesten, steep rock drops towards deep blue water and distant coastal villages, revealing the scale of Senja’s mountain-and-fjord landscape.
A high view from Hesten across rugged ridges and the open sea, with grey rock, green slopes and clear Arctic light shaping the scene.
A close view of Segla from the Hesten ridge, with the mountain’s sheer rock wall standing between sheltered fjord water and distant peaks.
Husøy sits on a small island surrounded by open sea, with steep Senja mountains fading into the distance behind the sheltered harbour.
A weathered boathouse with a rust-red roof stands beside the fjord, backed by quiet water, summer flowers and steep mountains.
From Husfjellet, a steep rock wall falls towards the sea, with distant peaks and turquoise shallows opening across the Senja coast.
A broad view from Husfjellet across ridges, fjord water and scattered mountain light, showing the layered scale of Senja’s coastal landscape.
A wide view from Husfjellet over turquoise fjord water and steep mountain walls, with scattered cloud light moving across the coast.
A lone hiker stands on a rocky outcrop below Husfjellet, surrounded by sweeping ridges, fjords and cloud-shadowed mountains.
The ridge below Husfjellet runs towards the Norwegian Sea, with distant peaks and a narrow coastal road tracing the edge of the landscape.
Rocky slopes below Husfjellet descend towards the open sea, with distant ridges and coastal mountains softened by shifting light.
From Husfjellet, a white beach and clear turquoise water appear far below, contrasting with the rough mountain ridge in the foreground.
The trail from Husfjellet follows a narrow mountain ridge through a dramatic landscape of peaks, fjords and broken summer cloud.
A calm fjord view framed by steep green mountains, with deep blue water and clear summer light along the Senja coast.
Clear turquoise water, small boats and red coastal buildings at Bøvær, where Senja’s fishing heritage sits beneath steep mountains.
Hamn seen from above, surrounded by small islands, deep blue water and vivid turquoise shallows along Senja’s outer coast.
A sailboat moves through the quiet water at Hamn as dark clouds gather above the orange glow of a late Senja sunset.
From the Journal
Senja made a strong impression on my first visit in August 2019 — a quieter, more compact alternative to Lofoten, with sharp mountains, fjords, coastal villages and Arctic summer light. In this Journal post, I reflect on what made the island such a powerful place to photograph.
