Chamonix is a commune in the in the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. It was the site of the 1924 Winter Olympics, the first Winter Olympics. Situated near the massive peaks of the Mont-Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe. It rises 4,810 m (15,782 ft) above sea level and is ranked 11th in the world in topographic prominence and is the third most visited natural site in the world. Chamonix is famous for its spectacular cable car up to the Aiguille du Midi (3842 m). Constructed in 1955, it was then the highest cable car in the world. Together with a cable car system going up to the Pointe Helbronner (3462 m) from Entréves in the Aosta Valley (Italy) it is possible to cross the entire Mont Blanc massif by cable car. Aiguille du Midi cable car, one of the highest cable cars in the world, apart from a few in South America. In fact the Aiguille Du Midi starts at 1035 m and finishes at a staggering 3810 m! From the bottom to the top, it has the greatest vertical range in the world. Bring warm clothes. as the temperature is alway cold even in mid-summer.

But beware, the mountains leave no room for reckless behaviour, and it requires the services of an experienced guide. Being a highly dangerous area (crevasses and seracs), it's strongly recommend taking a professional mountain guide and using appropriate mountain equipment.

Great view toward Les Bossons Glacier. This glacier descends directly from Mont Blanc in successive tiers over 3600m in altitude; it is the larges icefall in Europe. Mont-Blanc (4810m) is the snow-cowered peak behind the Les Bossons Glacier.

Pointe Helbronner - Italy

Pointe Helbronner (3,462 m) is a mountain in the French Alps on the watershed between France and Italy. The peak which previously was a mere geodetic reference point was named after Paul Helbronner, a French polytechnicien, alpinist and geodesist who pioneered cartography of the French Alps.

Pointe Helbronner is served with the Funivie Monte Bianco, a cable car from La Palud, a village near Courmayeur in Italy and also with the Mont Blanc gondola leading to the Aiguille du Midi in France at a distance of 5 km.
