The great water Jølstravatnet in Norway splits the municipality, creating two centres of population in Skei (in the eastern end of the water) and Vassenden (in English; "The water-end") in the western part, where the river Jølstra starts.

Alsåker in Hardanger, Norway

Alsåker in Ullensvang municipality in Hardanger, Norway.  With the blue fjord, snow-clad mountains and roaring waterfalls as a backdrop, the fruit blossom in spring (like in this picture) is one of the most captivating adventures imaginable.  The cherry and plum blossom usually starts in early May, whilst the apple blossom dressed in beautiful pink is at its most stunning towards the end of the same month.

Folgefonna glacier is the third largest glacier in the mainland of Norway. 14 May 2005 Folgefonna National Park was established, protecting the glaciers and the surrounding areas. The glacier is home to a summer skiing resort, located on its northern region.

Hardangerjøkulen - Kongsnuten

Hardangerjøkulen is the sixth largest glacier in mainland Norway. Hardangerjøkulen's highest point is 1,863 m above sea level. The glacier is easily accessed from the north in the winter, from the railway station Finse on Bergensbanen. More information here.

Toftestallen at Øygarden,  Norway

The ocean wave power plant at Toftestallen in Øygarden, outside Bergen, was finished in 1985 but a winter-storm in 1988 destroyed the plant. The picture shows the tapered channel where the ocean waves wash into a basin about 3 meters above sea surface. Hardangervidda

The Hardangervidda is a mountain plateau ("vidda" in Norwegian) in the Hardanger region of western Norway. It is the largest such plateau in Europe, with a cold year-round alpine climate and is the site of one of Norway's largest glaciers. Much of the plateau is protected as part of a national park; it is a popular tourist and leisure destination for many outdoor activities. More information here.

The "Lac de Ste Croix" lake in Provence. In the background you can see the Grand Canyon du Verdon. The Verdon Gorge is a river canyon that is considered by many to be Europe's most beautiful. It is the world's second largest gorge, at about 20 kilometers in length and more than 300 metres deep. It was formed by the Verdon River. More information here.

Preikestolen Lysefjorden Ryfylke

Preikestolen, Lysefjorden Rogaland

Preikestolen or Prekestolen, also known by the English translations of Preacher's Pulpit is a massive cliff 604 metres above Lysefjorden in Norway. The top of the cliff is approximately 25 by 25 meters. Once on the edge of the top, as many hikers have experienced it, one may definitely feel the desire to jump, invited by sort of a mystic voice, in a real dream of flying, that contributes to Preikestolen's majestic reputation. Vøringfossen is the most visited waterfall in Norway. The falls are 183 m (about 600 ft.) high. The falls are located in Eidfjord not far from Highway 7, which connects Oslo with Bergen. More information here and here.

The "Lac de Ste Croix" lake in Provence. In the background you can see the Grand Canyon du Verdon. The Verdon Gorge is a river canyon that is considered by many to be Europe's most beautiful. Maspalomas, Grand Canaria Spain

 The famous Dunes of Maspalomas are a surprisingly large area of hills and troughs of sand with patches of vegetation, a nature reserve since 1897. The most famous attraction in Stryn is the Briksdal Glacier. Visitors come from around the world to see this glacier arm which is beautifully situated between casacading waterfalls and high mountain tops. Briksdal Glacier lies at the end of enchanting Oldedal valley as you can see on this photo.

Briksdalsbreen terminates in a small glacial lake, Briksdalsbrevatnet, which lies 346 meters above sea level. The size of Briksdalsbreen is not only depending on temperature, but is also strongly affected by precipitation. This photo was taken in July 2009.

Kjenndalen, Stryn - Norway

If you drive on to the Kjenndalen valley, you will see some very distinctive scenery. Kjenndalen is one of the finest gems in Norway’s jewellery box. The valley is like a miniature Grand Canyon, with high mountains and narrow tributary valleys. The summits are clad in ancient pinewoods and the Kjenndalselva river flows along the flat valley floor.

Horseshoe Bend - USA

Horseshoe Bend is the name for a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River located near the town of Page, Arizona, in the United States. It is located slightly downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell. Accessible via a 1.2 km hike from U.S. Route 89, it can be viewed from the steep cliff above, forming a spectacular vista. Grand Canyon - USA

Grand Canyon National Park is one of the world’s premier natural attractions, attracting about five million visitors per year. Longstanding scientific consensus has been that the canyon was created by the Colorado River over a six million year period. Bryce Canyon - USA

Bryce Canyon National Park is a national park located in southwestern Utah. Despite its name, this is not actually a canyon, but rather a giant natural amphitheater created by erosion along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Bryce is distinctive due to its geological structures, called hoodoos, formed from wind, water, and ice erosion of the river and lakebed sedimentary rocks. Death Valley - USA

Death Valley is one of the hottest places in the world. The record high in the park was recorded in 1913 at a blazing 57 °C. This is second only to a 58 °C temperature taken in Libya in 1922. Since it is often up to four degrees hotter near Badwater than it is where the official record was recorded, it is entirely likely that Death Valley should hold the title as the hottest place on Earth. Gamlehaugen, Bergen - Norway

Kannesteinen Vågsøy

Over thousands of years, ocean waves have ground the rock to the special shape it has today. Every year many visitors come to take a closer look at the stone. The Kannestein or Kanne Stone was formed by loose stones and the pounding of the waves over a period of thousands of years, and stands today as a 4 - 5 metre high, narrow-footed rock.
